It prevents cancer
That is right. Our first Washington apple health benefit example is this: it can prevent cancer. And not just one kind of cancer. Studies at the Cornell University found that the more apples consumed, the lower the number of tumors among the test animals. The apple consumption tested was equivalent to about one to six apples a day for 24 weeks.
Apple contains quercetin. Quercetin is identified as one of the most beneficial flavonols in lowering the risk of and preventing pancreatic cancer. It is found in a study that the overall risk was reduced among the study participants but smokers who consumed flavonols rich foods had significantly greater risk reduction.
Phytochemichals that are more abundant in the apple peel, appear to inhibit the growth of or kill at least three different types of human cancer cell: liver, breast and colon, according to a research team at Cornell University.
Eating one apple per day can reduce the risk of colorectal by more than one third. This was proven by researchers in Poland, who surveyed 700 cancer free individuals and 592 people with colorectal cancer about their lifestyle and diet. Cancer free individuals tended to eat more apples than those with cancer.
Also, the more apples per day an individual ate; the risk of them developing colorectal cancer is reduced. The researchers also found that the anti-cancer effect was seen when an individual had a low total consumption of vegetables and fruits, but consumed at least an apple per day. Reducing colorectal cancer can be done through a high fiber diet and apples are a good source of fiber. These are the proofs of Washington apple health benefits.
It is good for your heart
Daily consumption of apples and apple juice may help protect against heart disease and reduce the damage caused by bad cholesterol, as reported by researchers at the University of California-Davis based on the human study.
Do you want to lose your weight? Try adding apples to your diet
Good news for those who are struggling to lose their weight. Overweight women who ate the equivalent of three pears or apples per day, lost more weight on a low calorie diet compared to women who didn’t add fruit to their diet, according to a study done by researchers from State University of Rio de Janeiro.
A source of antioxidants
Another Washington apple health benefit is that it is rich in antioxidants. According to the United States Department of Agriculture or USDA, apples are among the top 20 sources of antioxidant. Although the USDA only categorized three specific varieties of apples, all apples contain beneficial levels of antioxidants. Two third of antioxidants in apple are found in the peel.
It reduces the risk of diabetes
In a study that involved 187,382 people, it is found that people who ate three servings per week of blueberries, raisins, pears, grapes or apples had a 7% lower risk of developing type-2 diabetes, compared to those who didn’t eat.
